Millions of employees quit their jobs in 2021. Various factors have contributed to this employee turnover and certain industries have been affected more than others. The pandemic has taken a toll with burnout and mental fatigue and employees are looking at work and life through a different lens. Workers are looking for opportunities more aligned with their personal and professional needs.
Indications are that this will carry on for the foreseeable future. The American Staffing Association notes that 4 in 10 U.S. adults are likely to look for a new job within the next year with compensation and flexibility as key motivating factors. Employers that are losing employees need to determine the cause(s) and assess their workplace for needed adjustments.
Ask yourself:
Compensation and Benefits. How do we measure up to our competitors? Do we understand what benefits our employees use and which ones are important to them? Do what makes sense for your business but aim to have a competitive total rewards offering for your employees.
Training and Development. Does our company promote opportunities for training and development? Do we have the expertise we need? Evaluate the necessary requirements and look at reskilling and upskilling your current workforce. Nurture your talent while also helping your business with both current and future needs.
Support and Communication. Do I make my employees feel valued and appreciated? What is their working environment and how can I make it better? The employee experience is critical right now. Provide recognition and feedback on an ongoing basis. Listen to your employees tell you what they want through such vehicles as 1:1 discussions and employee surveys.
Talent turnover remains a top concern for many employers. View this time as a unique opportunity to examine and retool your retention strategy. Check out FrankBlog for additional articles on relevant/related employment topics.
