Red, White, and Review: Your Mid-Year HR Check-In

As we celebrate Independence Day and the midpoint of the year, July is the perfect time to watch a fireworks show, enjoy some barbeque, and revisit workplace goals and progress. Whether your company is experiencing seasonal slowdowns or preparing for a busy second half, a mid-year check-in helps ensure alignment, engagement, and legal compliance across the organization.

Revisit Goals and Performance Plans

To kick off your mid-year review, check in on individual and team performance goals set earlier in the year and consider the following questions:

  • Are individual employees on track to meet their performance goals?
  • Is the company as a whole and individual departments on track to meet performance goals?
  • Have company or department priorities shifted since the first half of the year?

These mid-year check-ins can be formal or informal and are great opportunities for managers to touch base, provide feedback, and make adjustments that reflect evolving business needs.
Managers should also be encouraged and empowered to celebrate progress, recognize both individual and team wins, and coach employees through any challenges. These conversations not only show employees that their manager is a source of support but also keeps the team moving in the right direction.

Reengage Your Workforce

Summer can often bring a slowdown in business; many employees take vacation during the summer months, business itself may slow for the season, or employees can even experience burnout and decreased motivation. Use this time to reconnect with the team; this can be in the form of utilizing an employee engagement survey or department-level round table meetings to get a pulse on the state of the company. Some questions you can ask include:

  • What do you feel is going well?
  • What do you feel could be improved?
  • Do you feel your work has an impact on the company?
  • Do you feel supported by management?
  • What support would help you do your job better?

Keep in mind if your employees are taking their time to respond to your questions, you should make an effort to consider their comments, provide feedback, and consider solutions if needed. Even small changes can improve morale. If there are concerns brought up that cannot be alleviated, address this as well so employees don’t feel ignored.

Compliance and Policy Updates

July also marks a mid-year milestone for many employment laws, particularly state and local changes that take effect on or around July 1. Consult with your HR Consultant to ensure you are up to date on any legal changes, including wage and hour laws, paid leave requirements, and employee classification work rules. Check any required postings as well to ensure they are current. Required workplace posters can be found through MyFrankCrum in the “My Resources” section.

Plan for the Second Half

With half the year behind you, now’s the time to identify what’s next. Is it time to roll out a new training initiative? Revisit succession planning or consider upskilling or reskilling? Evaluate benefit offerings ahead of open enrollment? Planning ahead now will ease the pressure at the end of the year.

A mid-year check-in isn’t just about reviewing numbers and documents; it’s about renewing your commitment to the people who keep your organization running. With thoughtful reflection and forward planning, you can finish the year strong!
