What does a typical day look like for you?
My role involves leading the FrankAdvice team of HR Consultants, supporting sales, and managing the delivery and content of HR best practice information to client owners and managers. One of my days can range from talking with a broker, to finalizing a blog or client legal alert, to working on a project to enhance our service offering.
What aspect of your prior experience has helped you achieve success in your current role on the FrankAdvice team?
My background is consulting with business owners and managers in various industries on a wide range of employment practices topics. My education and training have given me a solid foundation and continuous learning helps keep me up to date. I love to travel internationally and a lot of that over the years has been done on a solo basis. You have to be flexible as you encounter new situations and/or your plans have to change. Being able to adapt to unexpected situations is a critical skill that translates into the business world.
What’s the most challenging part of your role?
COVID-19 has been a new challenge. Even without a pandemic, staying on top of new laws and evolving HR practices is exciting and keeps me on my toes. Consulting requires you to look at various angles and consider different factors at play. Not everything in HR is black and white and you have to be comfortable operating in the gray sometimes.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about your role on the FrankAdvice team?
FrankAdvice is not like a typical internal HR department. We don’t work with employees. We provide guidance to client owners and managers on options and risk and they decide what they would like to do.

A successful HR professional will have the ability to move with the times and keep up-to-date on the ever-changing rules of HR; have good communication skills to clearly inform clients of the changes; possess strong conflict management skills to be able to guide clients through difficult situations.
What does a typical day look like for you?
There isn’t a typical day for us in the FrankAdvice department. Our day is determined by the needs of the clients reaching out to us on that particular day. Our day may begin with something as simple as background checks to more complicated things such as the latest COVID-19 developments.
What aspect of your prior experience has helped you achieve success in your current role on the FrankAdvice team?
My prior experience in HR management has assisted me in my current role on the FrankAdvice team because I have experienced many of the challenges our clients experience on a daily basis. I can relate to the issues at hand and provide best practices so that our clients can focus on running their business without having to figure out how to do HR.
What’s one thing most people would be surprised to find out about your role or the world of HR?
In my opinion, people would be surprised at the amount of topics and the varied topics we cover in the FrankAdvice team. We provide guidance on things such as Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and the rest of the alphabet soup.

What are three qualities that you believe are the most important to be a successful HR professional?
It's important to maintain the "human" element in my work as an HR professional, and in order to do that successfully, I believe the three most important qualities for an HR professional are having great communication skills to effectively communicate regulations to clients, to be knowledgeable in the ever-changing world of HR, and to be empathetic toward our clients and their situations.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day would start with an action plan of what is most important to be completed that day as well as the HR consults from our assigned clients and FrankAdvice. This plan may quickly turn to the urgent needs of our clients especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. So for the most part, there are not many typical days.
What aspect of your prior experience has helped you achieve success in your current role on the FrankAdvice team?
My previous career in Human Resources has always been in the PEO Industry. My previous roles also included aspects of Benefits and Account Management as well as Human Resources, which I feel gives me a unique perspective when assisting clients.
What’s the most challenging part of your role?
Working with clients that may need to change processes they had used for years to become compliant with new regulations, and to convey that information in a way that will have them regarding FrankCrum as a valued business partner.

Critical thinking, patience, and effective communication – sometimes people only give you a portion of the story or they give too much so you need to be able to pull out the information you need but be patient with the client, who may be anxious about the situation. The regulations and best practices we work within also have so many nuances a non-HR professional may not understand so being able to communicate in a way that our client understands these minor details is important.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Other than the inevitable questions concerning COVID-19, you never know what type of scenario a client is going to call with so it keeps things interesting. In between those calls and emails, working on handbooks and policies is another daily task.
What aspect of your prior experience has helped you achieve success in your current role on the FrankAdvice team?
My years of prior HR experience has been working in healthcare, distribution, manufacturing, non-profit, and federal contractor settings. Because of this, I am able to draw from those personal experiences to know what realistically works (and what doesn’t) and mold that to fit the PEO setting.
What’s the most challenging part of your role?
In previous jobs, I have always been involved directly with managers and employees and could dig deeper into issues that arose but in my current role, I only get one side of what is going on. I have to be able to pull from my own past experiences, critical thinking, and intuition to know what questions to ask to really get to the heart of the situation without being able to ask everyone involved.
