top job candidate shaking employers handWhen it comes to hiring the best employees out there, it is a two way street. You know, from an employer perspective, that you are seeking a candidate who has the skills and personality to get the job done and be the right fit for your culture. Similarly, the top job candidates are looking for employers who will:

  • Set employees up for success and coach their growth
  • Value employees both as professionals and individuals
  • Provide a positive working environment
  • Be flexible
  • Offer competitive pay and benefits

1. Career Development is a major motivator for top job candidates

The best candidates often look for a workplace where they can better develop their skills and gain knowledge under a strong leader. When goals are set together and expectations met or exceeded, employees feel like they are a part of the long-term strategy within the company. Understanding the company’s vision as well as actively participating in it, creates confident employees who want to stick with you for the long haul.

2. Value and Recognize Hard Work

This is a win-win for employers. When employees feel respected and appreciated, they work harder and yield a more solid product. Top job candidates want to be listened to, and not just when they have a problem or concern. Good employees want to contribute to your project ideas along the way, and feel like they add value to your company. Show your employees that you value them and their contributions to the team, whether it is a simple email or something on a larger scale.

3. A Positive and Safe Work Environment

Most employees want to come in, do their job, and get back to their personal lives without a lot of drama. Keeping morale up and negativity down is a challenge for most business owners, but conquering it yields great rewards. Build your team or organization up by doing things like: organizing team meetings where new ideas are encouraged, having an open door policy to discuss issues, holding friendly competitions, or having occasional team outings or celebrations. Employees also want to know they are safe at work. Make sure to handle personnel issues in a timely manner so things do not escalate. Also, be sure the office or work site is orderly with no lingering hazards.

4. Flexibility is key to top job candidates

Employees value their lives outside the office, and they need to be able to take care of personal things in order to consistently do good work for you. If an employee feels overloaded or stressed, he or she may burn out. Wanting an employee to succeed in life is just as important as wanting them to succeed inside your organization. Have flexible schedule and paid time off options when possible.

5. Competitive Pay and Benefits

Potential employees will expect to have a salary that matches their qualifications and is appropriate and competitive in the field. Workers will be happier and likely stay with your company longer if you offer a variety of benefits and retirement options. Sometimes, other perks like a family legal plan or discount ticket options go a long way too. Providing employees with these types of offers makes them feel well taken care of and that is the key to longevity.

Remember, when it comes to recruiting and retaining top job candidates, you want to focus on what matters to employees: growth, appreciation, positivity, flexibility and benefits.  Looking for more expert insight on how to choose the best candidate for the job?
