What is National Payroll Week?
As defined by the American Payroll Association (APA), National Payroll Week “celebrates the partnership between America’s employees, the payroll professionals who pay them, and the critical government programs and agencies that our payroll system funds.”
Coinciding with the week of Labor Day, National Payroll Week is used by the APA, its local chapters, and others in the payroll industry to spread awareness of the payroll withholding system, host community service projects, and educate others on how paychecks are calculated and how to get the most out of their pay.
With the slogan “America Works Because We’re Working For America,” National Payroll Week highlights the importance of what payroll professionals do every day.
What Does the Payroll Department Do?
The payroll department plays a crucial role in ensuring the funding of important government programs that keep America running smoothly. The money that payroll professionals collect from employees’ paychecks goes to fund programs such as social security, Medicare, the building of federal highways, the U.S. military, and much more.
In addition to processing paychecks, the payroll department is also responsible for keeping detailed records, managing tax compliance, distributing through direct deposit or checks, handling wage garnishments and withholdings, and much more.
Payroll is one of the most important aspects of business, as it affects employee morale and reflects the financial stability and reputation of a business. Employees rely on their paychecks and errors or untimely payments can create a lack of trust. However, when paychecks are accurate and distributed in a timely manner, employees are more engaged and motivated.
