The following states, California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Washington and the District of Columbia have Paid Family and Medical Leave programs or expanded temporary disability leave programs to cover paid family leave as well.
Connecticut and Oregon have enacted laws creating paid leave programs; in Connecticut contributions start in January 2021 and for Oregon in January 2022 and employees may begin to use the benefit the following year (January 2022 for Connecticut and January 2023 for Oregon).Massachusetts and Connecticut employers can learn more about upcoming milestones and have links to resources in their state update further in this issue of FranklyHR.
Paid family leave programs vary in benefits but provide compensation to employees that take leave for qualifying reasons. Employers may be required to pay a payroll tax and to withhold and remit employee contributions.
