All I Want For Christmas Is….

Learn what are some top items that employees want from their employers for the holiday season.
The 2023 holiday season is here and it is a good time to recognize and reward your employees for their hard work all year long. Like some wise men may have pondered way back when, what gifts can we offer? Let’s take a look at what employees often welcome during this time of year.

Gift of Money
A year-end bonus is a common gift to employees at the end of the year. This reward is an expression of gratitude by the employer for a job well done. It is within the company’s discretion to pay a year-end bonus but employees may come to expect it– or even pre-spend before getting a bonus - like Clark Griswold in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

This time of year can also be financially difficult and a little extra Jingle Jangle in the pocket can put a smile on their face.

Gift of Time
This gift is much appreciated during the busy holiday season. While The Last Holiday of Thanksgiving was just a few weeks ago, employees enjoy taking time off in December as well.

A growing trend is closing between Christmas and New Year. This is easier to do with desk jobs where work can be paused but that is not feasible for every company. If employees have to work on a holiday, try to offer a different day off. If employees are at work on Christmas Eve, see if they can leave a little earlier than the normal closing time. Even offering flexibility with an extended lunch period for holiday errands can be welcome. Encourage the use of PTO so employees can head somewhere fun for The Holiday or kick their feet up Home Alone.

Gift of Celebration
The company holiday party is a staple for most companies and is a festive way to celebrate the season. A holiday party can boost morale and show appreciation for the team. Employers should carefully plan the holiday party to avoid potential liability risks; unless you end up having a Die Hard event (yes, that is a Christmas movie!) alcohol consumption is often high risk, so prepare to handle issues caused by drinking such as injuries, harassment or other inappropriate conduct.

In-office celebrations such as potlucks or sweet treats can promote camaraderie and a break during the workday. A heartfelt thank you is a simple way to celebrate your employees.

The above gifts can have a positive impact on employee morale and engagement. Don’t just take our word for it – ask employees what they would like and what matters to them. And even with the stress and challenges we all have, still, It's A Wonderful Life.
