The Importance of SEO for Small Businesses
For any business that’s looking to increase online traffic, finding a way to boost search engine ranking in an effective and cost-efficient manner is crucial. The vast majority of Internet users use a search engine like Google or Bing to find what they’re looking for, and they generally choose the results that are the most relevant—in other words, users tend to choose whatever is ranked highest on the search engine results page. One of the best ways to boost a business’s search engine ranking is through the use of SEO, or search engine optimization. Here are a few reasons why SEO matters for businesses with an online presence.

What is SEO?

SEO sounds complicated, but it’s actually rather straightforward. When a person plugs in a word or term into a search engine, that engine will show everything that it deems to be the most relevant to what the user is searching for.

Basically, SEO is a collection of simple practices and techniques that can be used to make a website more pertinent to a search engine. The algorithms used by search engines aren’t discussed publicly, but search engine companies are fairly open about some of the simpler things a user can do to increase relevancy, such as using original content, stronger keywords and increasing activity on social media.

Visibility and branding

By utilizing SEO, a business can increase its visibility and direct additional attention towards its brand. If a business has a high ranking on a search engine’s result page, then there’s a greater chance that more users will notice the business when they search for particular terms. Furthermore, by increasing ranking, a business can promote its overall brand, allowing more users to become aware of its identity.

Business Credibility

Some might be inclined to think that SEO is all about jamming keywords into web content as much as possible, but that’s pretty far from the truth. Much of SEO is related towards the use of original content as well as effectively placed keywords. By creating web copy that’s engaging and informative, and by also using keywords sparingly, but correctly, a business will come across as being knowledgeable about its respective field. This, in turn, will help to increase overall business credibility.

Increase traffic

As mentioned previously, search engine users tend to click the links that search engines deem to be the most relevant. So by utilizing basic SEO techniques, a business can increase its traffic in an organic manner.

Cost effective

SEO has a decent ROI, especially when compared to other online marketing techniques, such as pay per click advertising or large social media campaigns. SEO is all about practicing common sense techniques (such as creating original content) that will undoubtedly help a business boost its ranking over the long term.

SEO is an important tool for any business with an online presence. By using SEO, a business can increase online traffic in a number of simple ways, making it a resource that owners and mangers shouldn’t overlook.
